Deborah Redden, a lifetime resident of the Jersey Shore and an avid sailor, paints on location the boats,
lighthouses and scenes that have shaped her life and constantly challenge her artistic style. Over time she
has changed from a traditional approach to painting to a freer more abstract style. She works to capture the
emotion of the scene in a spontaneous burst of color and brush work that results in a unique expression of
artistic energy.
Redden has a Master’s Degree in Art from Pratt Institute, N.Y. and a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education
from Monmouth University, N.J. From 1988 until 2006, she was on the faculty at Monmouth University as
Professor of Methods of Teaching Elementary and Secondary Art. Each year she exhibited her work in the
Faculty Exhibition. In November 1999, Redden appeared before the New Jersey State Senate in Trenton to
be recognized for her "outstanding artistic abilities" by Senate Majority Leader John O. Bennett.
For 25 years Redden worked locally as an art teacher for both elementary and secondary students. Most
recently she was a full-time Fine Arts teacher at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School and retired in
June 2004. She presently serves as President of the Board of Trustees of the Guild of Creative Art,
Shrewsbury, where she is an Exhibiting Member. Continuing to use her teaching skills , she gives drawing
and painting lessons in the Guild studio.
Redden is a member of the Plein Air Painters of New Jersey and has painted the landscapes of New
Jersey, Maine, Block Island, Ireland and England. She has had several solo and group shows locally and is
an Associate member of the New Jersey Watercolor Society and the Garden State Watercolor Society. As a
juried entrant, she exhibits annually at the Monmouth Festival of The Arts, Tinton Falls. Her work is in many
private collections around the United States.
